For this feature, S-Chassis photographer Justin Cunningham met up with Derek Kien in their home state of Arkansas to check out his Garage Mak S15. Derek purchased this gorgeous Silvia back in September 2012 after spending 4 years in Okinawa, Japan. A month before returning stateside he started car shopping hoping to find a 240 in reasonable condition and cheap with the idea of building on a blank canvas to suit his own tastes and to keep the drift adrenaline pumping through his veins.

After weeks of shopping online and talking to sellers Derek stumbled across this super mint S15 Spec-R and it was in his home state of all places. This car was so well looked after that it didn’t even see the outside when it rains. Ever since Derek was 15 his dream car was the brand new (at the time) Nissan Silvia S15, he just had to have this car and just so happened to have the money available at the time to make his dreams reality. A couple weeks of negotiations went by before Derek and the seller were settled on a price. A week after returning back to the states Derek drove to Tennessee and picked up his dream car.

Derek kept the factory Spec-R aero and tried to enhance the aggressive stance and overall appearance he likes to call “Japanese Muscle.” After a couple of years with this configuration Derek decided it was time for a drastic change. He wanted a wide body S15, but something that nobody had in the states (if a S15 wasn’t already enough!). Derek spent months while on a deployment to Afghanistan sifting through companies in Japan until he found the ingenious styling and crew of Garage Mak. With the help of the employees at Derek was able to purchase this race inspired body kit and have it shipped to his home in the USA.

Even with all of the different and unique modifications, his favorite and definitely longest searched for item is the Garage Mak carbon fiber dash cover. It took over 2 years of searching to find a decent priced one that the seller was willing to ship.

The most recent mod minus the complete over haul of the exterior are the custom designed one off 3 piece wheels from Sergey’s House of Wheels outside Chicago. After making the decision to go wide body Derek faced the daunting task of acquiring new wheels to fill the guards. Luckily he found Sergey’s custom wheels for sale which included almost every design aspect he was looking for. It only took a few days of trial fitments and suspension work to achieve the look Derek was after.

The engine is pushing out some serious power thanks to a long list of impressive modifications, currently making around 585HP. This power is not enough for Derek, and with another tune on the to-do list he is hoping to see in excess of 700HP produced from deep within the SR20DET.

Future goals for the Silvia include getting this rare (stateside) s-chassis into every car show, event or charity run he possibly can with the aim of bringing a little rare Nissan nostalgia to the masses in the United States. Being active duty military hampers those goals a little, but Derek does try his best with every pay check received.
